Lost Lost Episode 1

The camera focuses on a dark brown eye which suddenly opens. It slowly backs away to reveal Richard's face. He's lying in bed. He stretches, yawns, and slowly gets up. His feet shuffle into slippers and he pulls a robe on over his blue striped pajama's.
Female voice: "Coffee's hot!"
Richard: "Coming!"
Richard shuffles over to a curtain, which he draws back to reveal a modern looking kitchen. Cindy the flight attendant is stirring cream into her coffee.
Cindy: "Good morning Richard. I need a ton of cream for this coffee you all have here."
Richard: "Oh well, you know. Ben likes it strong." Richard serves himself coffee.
Cindy: "Other than the coffee, this is a great place. How is it that no one ever found it?"
Richard shrugs. "We're good at hiding things."
The camera slowly backs away from Cindy and Richard, leaving the kitchen. It scans a large airy room with skylights – all natural wood and earth tone fabric. Then it continues to back up into a dark crevice, and then, into ... the caves from Season 1.

LOST

Several "hostiles" move around the main room busily. In a corner we see some small children playing a game with a woman. The space is completely open, with a few couches here and there. Richard, now fully dressed, enters the space. Everyone looks at him.
Richard: "It's time that we discussed our position and made a decision."
Buerk (new character): "And what, exactly, is our position?"
Cindy: "We've been waiting here for word from Ben for a week. We don't know if he or Locke are going to come for us. We can't just sit here."
Buerk: "Cindy, you haven't been with us for very long. You don't understand how things work. But Richard, I expect you to know better. We follow orders. That's how we stay safe."
A murmur of agreement is heard. The room subtly shifts and we sense that the Others are dividing.
Richard: "There's a new face of leadership. Ben has served his purpose well. But he can no longer keep us safe. We need a new leader. We need Locke."
Now everyone is talking at once.
The discussion goes on for some time, becoming more and more heated. There are two clear divisions, those who follow Ben and those who follow Locke.
Richard: "I am senior to all of you. I have been on the island far longer than any of the rest of you. I am going to go see Jacob and make our final decision."
Buerk: "So that's it, you're the dictator now?"
Cindy: "I don't see you providing strong leadership."
Buerk: "There's another alternative we haven't discussed."
Everyone stares at him.
Buerk: "There's Jack."
Silence falls on the group.
Richard: "Jack hasn't been chosen by the Island."
Buerk: "As far as I can tell, neither has Locke."
There is a moment of silence. Then Richard turns and walks out.
Buerk: "Richard can have his suicide mission. I'm going to find Jack and bring him back here."
Buerk turns and leaves.

Jin and Bernard are walking along the beach. Jin carries fishing gear. Bernard is talking about karma while Jin nods. Suddenly they hear a horrific noise from the jungle. It sounds almost human – like a creature howling and honking. They run into the jungle.
Once in the jungle, they see no one. They look around as the whispering begins.
Bernard looks at Jin.
Bernard: "Jin, do you see anything?"
Jin's eyes widen in horror as Bernard is attacked from behind. His attacker wears tan robes and has a hideous mask over his face covered with tubules. He shakes a spear in one hand and howls. It is a Sandperson, and then several more burst out of the jungle behind him.
Jin grabs Bernard and tries to run, but the Sand People grab him and pull him away. Jin runs to the beach for his life.

When he gets to the beach he rushes to Sun and tells her what happened in rapid Korean. She rushes over to Jack's tent.
Sun: "Jack, Jack!"
Jack emerges from the tent. "What is it?"
Sun: "Jack, someone has taken Bernard! Jin said it was someone in tan robes with a mask."
Jack: "One of the others?"
Sun: "No, Jin said he'd never seen this person before. He said it reminded him of something, but he's not sure what."
Rose walks up. "Jin, Sun? Where is Bernard? I thought he was fishing with you?"
Jin: "Bernard, he is taken. I'm sorry."
Rose cries out.
Jack: "Jin, take me back there. Sun, you go get Kate. We've got to track them."
Sun leaves to find Kate. Jack and Jin and Rose set out. After they are gone, Juliet emerges from Jack's tent, looks around, and walks off. Kate and Sun nearly run into her. They pass by and go into the jungle.
Flashback whoosh sound effect.
Rose is sitting at home, watching TV. The program goes to commercial, and she stands up. She goes into the kitchen and glances out the window. She stops and looks again. There is only one car in the driveway. She calls out for Bernard and looks worried again. She begins walking quickly through the house, calling out Bernard's name. She rushes back down and goes through some stuff piled up on a table near a door. She panics.

In Locke's settlement, Hurley and Sawyer are playing horseshoe.
Hurley: "You know, I'm not sure about Locke."
Sawyer: "I'm never sure about anybody on this place."
Hurley: "Well, I mean, I guess I could get in trouble for talking like this now, but nobody's talking back to Locke. I mean, we've got to balance the power, you know?"
Sawyer: "What're you talking about, balance?
Hurley: "You know, like how in America we have the court system and the congress system, right?"
Sawyer: "Yeah, well, I'm particularly knowledgeable about the court system, aren't I?"
Hurley: "Well, so they balance. And there's no balance here."
Sawyer: "Whatcha gonna do about it, Nightrider?"
Hurley: "I was thinking, you ever watch People's Court?"
Sawyer: "Yeah."
Hurley: "Well, maybe like we could start our own People's Court. You know, bring a case against John, ask him to lock Ben back up."
Sawyer, considering: "That's not a half bad idea. There's more of us than of him, at any rate."
Hurley: "Yeah. We just need to bring everybody together and then get Locke. Then we'll present both sides of the story and let Judge Wapner decide."
Sawyer nods: "Of course, I already know what I would do, but it couldn't hurt to pretend."
Hurley: "You? I was thinking I'd be Judge Wapner."
Sawyer laughs: "Are you kidding? You got no gravitas! You can't be a judge!"
Hurley: "What, and you do?"
They argue and Sawyer storms off, yelling that if he can't be Judge Wapner he'll be Judge Judy.

Back in the jungle, Rose and Jin and Jack arrive at the place of attack. Kate and Sun rush up a few minutes later. Jack and Kate begin arguing about what is best to do. Rose notices something on the ground and picks it up. It is a dirty handkerchief. She presses it to her forehead.
Flashback whoosh sound effect.
Rose makes a phone call. "It's Bernard! I think he's driven off somewhere!" She listens to the reply, then says, "No, of course he's not ok! He's still on those pain meds!" Another pause, then "OK, you call the cops, I'll get in my car and go look for him." She rushes out the front door and jumps in the car. She begins driving around the neighborhood. Eventually, she leaves the neighborhood and drives to the closest shopping center. She sees a car, parked diagonally across two spaces. She parks hurriedly and gets out of her car. She scans the shopping center. Suddenly she sees Bernard. He is walking crookedly out of the grocery store.
"BERNARD!" she cried out and runs to him. He smiles at her.
Bernard: "Well, Rose, I didn' forge'" he slurs. He presents a handful of flowers.
Rose: "Forget what?"
Bernard: "This is the day you and I met," he says, still slurring. We notice cotton in his mouth.
Rose: "Bernard, you scared me! You shouldn't be driving today!"
Bernard: "I know, but I felt pretty good and I didn't want you to think I had forgotten."
Rose shakes her head and hustles Bernard back to her car. She drives him home. Her friend has arrived and agrees to go back to the shopping center and pick up Bernard's car. Rose gets Bernard back in bed.
Rose: "Bernard, you are on crazy pain medication. Don't leave the house again without telling me," she scolds.
Bernard: "Oh Rose, don't you like your flowers?"
Rose smiles and looks at the flowers, laid across the dresser. She looks back at Bernard and kisses him on the forehead. "They're beautiful, sweetheart."

Kate and Jack have finally come to a conclusion about what to do. Jack, Jin, and Kate will track the kidnappers, while Sun and Rose will go back to the beach. If Jack, Jin, and Kate aren't back by sundown, Sun and Rose will get torches and go looking for them. The group splits up.

As Sun and Rose arrive back in the camp, they see the freighter people huddled together. Daniel stands up when he sees them, but Charlotte strides forward angrily.
Charlotte: "Just where is Jack?"
Rose: "He's in the jungle, looking for my husband. Why are you so upset?"
Charlotte: "How do you expect us to rescue you if you all keep running off like that? We need to know what's going on?"
Rose: "I didn't think you were all that interested in rescuing us," she says, sarcastically. She and Sun walk off. Daniel walks up to Charlotte, but she brushes him off and walks away.
Juliette approaches Daniel, but both of them are distracted as Buerk walks onto the beach.
Juliette: "Buerk? What are you doing here?"
Buerk: "I could ask you the same question, Juliette. I'm here to see if we can't talk Jack into coming with us. I suppose you coming back is out of the question, of course."
Daniel: "Who are you? What are you talking about?"
Juliette: "Buerk, Jack isn't here right now. And what are you talking about? You know Jack will never agree to staying here. Did Richard support this?"
Buerk: "Richard has lost his mind. Ben and Locke are not getting us anywhere. I had to do something."
Juliette shakes her head. "But this?"
Daniel: "Are you with Ben?"
Buerk looks at him. "Not any more."

Richard is walking through the woods, tired and dirty. He comes across a line of gray ash, just like the one Locke saw. He looks up, expectant, and sees Jacob's cabin. He smiles. Just then, we hear the honking noise of the Sand People! They rush out from behind the cabin, honking and howling at Richard. Richard's face goes pale. He turns to run but they capture him. They drag him around to the back of the cabin, where he sees Bernard tied up to a tree. They look at each other.
Bernard: "Who the heck are you?"
Richard: "Who are YOU?"

Back from Hiatus

So, I know we're all preparing for a few weeks without Lost. Fortunately, I've come across a few plot summaries written by amateurs during the writers' strike. I will be posting, with embellishment, these lost Lost's in an effort to try and fight off withdrawal...

Yep, I'm Old

I'm officially old now, because I'm very tempted to write a blog entry about my recent illnesses. I was going to make it funny, but really, it would still be a catalog of illness. I think I'm trying to sort through it all - because we're not talking about suffering through 3 weeks of flu here. My recent ill health is more like a whirlwind 20 city tour of Europe than a 3 month stay in a small Irish village. Flu! Muscle Pain! Asthma complications! Laryngitis! etc!

However, I think a key for me is to keep my perspective accurate. For example, I know a woman whose 9 year old daughter has cancer. That pretty much always reminds me that I'm just a big whiny baby. Also, I'm still able to walk and talk and eat and keep food down. These are all good things. I haven't lost any mental ability, also a good thing. I may be out of town but I'm in a nice safe hotel with a decent bathtub and free Internet access. All good things.

So here's to keeping my perspective while I fight off every single germ that has existed since the dawn of time!
